I'm starting to think I should've done that dots chart thing too, because that would be the best way to describe this. And I have to note that it's really hilarious how level Josh and Ven are on the importance scale. For some reason, the two of you register as units and individuals at the same time, so some of this is going to apply to Ven at the same time.
So basically at the highest levels of importance is Narnia and his siblings/family. Friends are right below that, then acquaintances, and so on. Lovers would normally overlap Friends and Family, but Edmund hasn't bashed those particular hormonal/romantic buttons yet other than his minor crush on Maleficent which he knows is totally based on looks right now so they're kind of a foggy aside right now. Josh and Ven are pretty damn close to family without actually hitting it, but they don't occupy the same space. Edmund would trust them both with his back in battle and in other matters, but whereas he trusts Ven because they're friends and that's the kind of person Ven is, he trusts Josh in a more...
It really is kind of a blurred king to retainer relationship in that Edmund trusts Josh to act in an appropriate way to whatever situation pops up and that he doesn't have to worry or look at whatever Josh is doing to know they're working towards a similar goal. Which is usually Saving Someone(s) which may include themselves depending on context, but the thing still applies. And Edmund is more than willing to be flexible around whatever crazy idea Josh pops out or vice versa. It's a really instinctive trust. If someone had to depend on someone else other than Edmund to voice what Edmund might say/suggest, he'd trust Josh most. :|a
I think the best way I can put it is that even though they don't really talk about themselves in regular conversation, Edmund doesn't feel the need to look at Josh to understand what he's saying. Normally with conversation, there's eye contact and all that, and even with Ven he'll do this because theirs is kind of a more playful friendship? But he doesn't really do that as much with Josh, and it's not a bad thing. It's just like... if they're talking about the forge, they'll both look at the forge and talk about it even if they're gesturing about stuff. That's the sort of feeling I get about it.
Also in a way, Josh and Ven are distinctly Edmund's in a way that Edmund doesn't really designate with most people except with siblings (and even then not consciously), which is why the whole "not exactly family but close to it" feeling. Only with them because they're specifically his friendships and his siblings aren't around, it's more of a personal connection.
If any of the other Pevensies showed up, Edmund would introduce them with no trouble at all, but it's like they were his friends first and before. That doesn't demean any future friendships that might pop up, but it's also a rare distinction because outside of Aather it's usually a Pevensies' thing or someone else's. At least that's how Edmund perceives his memories right now. In his memories, he doesn't have anything in particular that one can say is his specifically and no one else's. Every other Pevensie has that except him. So having two really close friends here with that association is special in its own right.
I think knowing Josh has a sibling of his own increases how much Edmund can relate to him and vice versa, too. That particular kind of relationship makes more sense to someone who's lived something similar, so Edmund takes relief in that he doesn't have to explain it overly much either.
If we touch on the whole physical affection, Edmund's pretty comfortable around Josh with that too, but it's not his instinctive first reaction either. He's actually more comfortable reaching out to Ven right now just because Ven's more obviously open to it.
I guess the summary for this tl;dr would be shield bros without actually outright stating it? Or at least a similar relationship.
